Early life and rise to the Golden Throne
His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck was born on 11 November 1955. He was the beloved son of His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck and Her Majesty Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck. After the passing of his father, he became the Fourth Druk Gyalpo in 1972. He was very young, but he led with wisdom, courage, and deep love for the people.
Vision and leadership
His Majesty guided Bhutan with the belief that true progress is not only about money. He introduced the national vision of “Gross National Happiness,” which places people’s well-being at the center of development. This vision rests on four strong pillars: good governance, sustainable and fair development, protection of culture, and care for the natural environment.
Building a democratic future
During his reign, His Majesty slowly and carefully prepared Bhutan for a democratic system. He encouraged people to take part in decision-making through local and district bodies, strengthened laws and institutions, and began the national conversation that led to the Constitution. In 2006 he stepped down from the throne so that the next generation could lead a Constitutional Monarchy. This graceful act showed his humility and his trust in the people.
Environmental Stewardship
His Majesty made environmental protection a national duty. Large areas of Bhutan were set aside as national parks and biological corridors. He promoted forest conservation and clean rivers, and he inspired the promise to keep most of the country under forest cover for future generations. Because of this, Bhutan remains one of the world’s greenest nations.
Culture, education, and health
His Majesty supported monastic institutions, cultural festivals, national dress, language, and traditional arts so that Bhutan’s unique identity would remain strong. At the same time, he expanded schools, hospitals, and basic services across the country so that children could learn and families could live healthier lives.
Economic progress with care
Under his guidance, Bhutan invested in hydropower, roads, and communications while keeping growth balanced and responsible. He promoted a “high value, low impact” approach to tourism to protect culture and nature. Trade and friendship with neighboring countries were strengthened, and the country remained peaceful and stable.
Safety and sovereignty
His Majesty protected Bhutan’s sovereignty with firmness and wisdom. When threats appeared along the borders, he personally led and guided actions that kept the country safe, always placing the security and dignity of the people first.
Family and personal qualities
His Majesty is known for his simplicity, kindness, and closeness to the people. He enjoys the mountains, the countryside, and Bhutan’s traditional sports such as archery. He is a devoted father, and the values he lived by—service, compassion, and discipline—continue through the Royal Family.

The reign of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo shaped modern Bhutan.
